The Northwest Ordinance
Article 3
July 13, 1787
The article gives a reason before it gives an instruction: religion, morality and knowledge being necessary to good government and to happiness, schools and the means of education are to be encouraged forever. It then binds the government to the utmost good faith towards the Indians, says their lands and property shall never be taken from them without their consent, and requires laws to be made preventing wrongs done to them.
One piece a day, the same for everyone, drawn from the library and the articles. When you have read it, that is the day’s reading done.
Nothing here is kept back. Every piece stays where it lives, so you can read as much as you like in the library, in the articles or along a path. What this page does not keep is a list of what the reading was on any other day.
